ICOFOM event at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague Announcements

ICOFOM members and ICOM delegates are invited to attend a drinks reception to showcase the research outputs of the Visualising Transnational Museology project, which seeks to interrogate approaches to decolonisation and museum and heritage studies curriculum internationally.

This event will also launch the Shared Island Stories between Scotland and the Caribbean: Past, Present, Future project. ‘Shared Island Stories’ focuses on relations between the archipelagos of Scotland and the Caribbean by emphasising decolonial approaches and acknowledging the power differential between different islands vis-à-vis (neo)colonialism and racial capitalism.

The overarching project aim is to embrace and foster a partnership network of knowledge between national and transnational groups, institutions, and organisations – including the International Council of Museums (ICOM) – to highlight differences in conceptualisations of, and approaches to decolonisation.

These activities are being strongly supported by a dynamic team of students drawn from the postgraduate Museum and Gallery Studies programme and Undergraduate Student Assistantship programme at the University of St Andrews as well as the School of History at the University of the West Indies (UWI) in Trinidad and Tobago. The VTM project is supported by a transatlantic focus group of academics and museum professionals.

This event will offer a drinks reception and an opportunity to view the project’s outputs including;

  • Data Visualisation – An interactive bibliography of museum studies literature visualised geographically
  • Video Gallery – A database of videos on specific elements of museum practice, recorded with museum professionals internationally
  • Presentations – Speakers opening discussions on ‘Decolonisation in action’ in the museum sector

The overarching project aim is to embrace and foster a partnership network of knowledge between national and transnational groups, institutions, and organisations – including the International Council of Museums (ICOM) – to highlight differences in conceptualisations of, and approaches to decolonisation.

The event will be held at the Museum of Decorative Arts, 6:30pm – 8pm, 25th August. Disabled access is available.
